Unlocking New Sounds: دُ, ذُ, رُ, and زُ – Building Arabic Reading Skills with the Dammah Vowel (ـُ)
A New Sound Adventure Begins!
Salam and warm wishes to all our bright little learners and their wonderful parents! 🌟
As we continue our journey through the Dammah world, today’s lesson introduces us to a fresh group of Arabic letters: دُ (Daal), ذُ (Dhaal), رُ (Raa), and زُ (Zaa). Each of these letters brings a unique sound when paired with the round little Dammah — the short "u" sound that bounces like a gentle drumbeat!
Imagine a drum going du-du-du, a buzzing bee saying zu-zu, or a rocket launching with a ruuuu! — that’s how fun learning these sounds can be! With every new letter and sound, your child is building stronger recognition, pronunciation, and fluency skills — all essential steps toward confident Quran reading.
So let’s jump in, say the sounds aloud, trace the shapes, and enjoy the rhythm of learning together — one joyful sound at a time!
Key Learning Objectives for Lesson:
Learn to recognize the letters دُ (Daal), ذُ (Dhaal), رُ (Raa), and زُ (Zaa) with the Dammah vowel.
Practice how to pronounce the “u” sound of each letter clearly.
Understand how Dammah changes the sound of a letter.
Strengthen the connection between letter shapes and their Dammah sounds.
Begin to read and say small sound combinations using these letters.

Let’s Put Dammah into Action – Time for Some Fun Practice!
What better way to reinforce new sounds than through play? This week’s Dammah Activity Sheet is designed to help your child explore دُ (Daal), ذُ (Dhaal), رُ (Raa), and زُ (Zaa) in a colorful, hands-on way.
From tracing each letter to matching sounds and spotting shapes, every page is an opportunity to build muscle memory and boost recognition. Whether your child enjoys quiet coloring or a mini reading race, this sheet offers a blend of fun and focused learning.
Print it out, bring out the crayons, and enjoy some joyful revision time together — one Dammah at a time!
Playful Activities
1. “Dammah Sound Hunt”
Write the four letters with Dammah (دُ, ذُ, رُ, زُ) on sticky notes and place them around the room. Call out a sound, and have your child run and find the matching note! Each correct find earns a “Dammah Star” sticker.
2. “Which One Says What?” Jar Game
Prepare a jar with small folded paper slips — each one has a picture of a word that begins with one of the target letters (e.g., دُبّ for دُ). Your child pulls a slip, says the word aloud, and matches it to the correct letter card.
3. “Trace & Hop” Path
Draw the letters دُ, ذُ, رُ, and زُ in large size on a paper path or mat. Your child traces the letters with their finger while saying the sound aloud — then hops to the next one! Add silly sound effects for extra giggles.
We’d Love to Hear How Your Little Learner Sparkled Today!
How did your child enjoy discovering the bubbly sounds of دُ, ذُ, رُ, and زُ in today’s Dammah lesson? Was there a cheerful moment tracing the letters or a proud smile when they said the sounds just right?
We’d be so happy to hear all about it! Feel free to share a quick comment, a snapshot of their worksheet, or even a short video. Teacher Noura is always excited to cheer on their efforts and send back a special message of encouragement, inshaAllah.
Each new sound is more than just a lesson — it’s a joyful step closer to connecting with the Quran. And behind every little success is your love, support, and dedication. Keep going — one sound, one smile, one Dammah at a time!
