Learning the Arabic Letters سُ and شُ – Strengthening Arabic Reading with Playful Sounds
Salam Curious Explorers and Super Supportive Parents,
We’re sliding into Lesson 30 — and this one has a whispery kind of magic! After the strong, bold sounds of رُ and زُ, we’re now leaning into the softer swirls of سُ (Seen) and شُ (Sheen) with the joyful curl of the Dammah.
Just think of the difference between sunlight (سُ) and shimmer (شُ) — both soft, both bright, and each carrying its own unique sound. Your child is now ready to hear and feel this nuance, to trace it, pronounce it, and begin mastering the gentle rhythm of Arabic sounds.
By this point, your little learner has traveled through Fathah, Kasrah, and a big part of Dammah — and it’s all adding up. They’re not just learning letters. They’re building sound recognition, pronunciation accuracy, and eventually, confident Quran reading, inshaAllah.
So let’s sparkle through these swishy sounds together — one joyful “shooo” at a time!
Key Learning Objectives
Recognize and pronounce the Arabic letters Seen (س) and Sheen (ش) with the Dammah (ـُ) vowel.
Understand the difference between the "s" and "sh" sounds when paired with the Dammah (e.g., سُ = su, شُ = shu).
Trace the letters سُ and شُ correctly to build muscle memory and sound association.
Practice blending Dammah-based syllables into fluent, flowing speech.
Strengthen listening and repetition skills through soft, breathy articulation.
Boost confidence in moving from bold consonants to lighter, nuanced sounds.

Playful Activities
🎯 1. “Spin the Sound” Game
Make a simple spinner with arrows pointing to سُ and شُ. Have your child spin, then say the sound and act out something that starts with it!
سُ = سُنبلة (spike of wheat) – they can pretend to harvest
شُ = شُعاع (ray of light) – they can pretend to shine like the sun
✋ 2. “Sound & Shape” Hop
Place printed or drawn letters سُ and شُ around the room like stepping stones. Call out a sound, and have your child hop to the correct letter while saying it aloud!
🎨 3. “Sound Stamp Art”
Give your child letter stamps (or just markers) to stamp سُ and شُ across a paper. Then, draw fun things that begin with each sound: a smiling sun for سُ, a shining star for شُ. Great for creativity + phonics!
We’d Love to Hear How Your Little Learner Did Today!
Did your child sparkle while saying سُ or shout out شُ with glee? Whether it was a victorious moment during “Spin the Sound” or a burst of creativity during Sound Stamp Art — we’d be delighted to hear all about it!
Feel free to send in a quick comment, a picture of their worksheet, or even a short video. Teacher Noura is always excited to cheer your little one on with a special message of encouragement, inshaAllah!
Each sound mastered is another stepping stone toward Quran fluency — and it’s all happening because of your dedication and warmth. Keep going, one Dammah at a time — you’re nurturing a confident, joyful reader, mashaAllah!
